The third day of the Tournament Round had 2 games. Team Europe vs Team Czech Republic and Team Russia vs Team North America
The first game was Team Europe vs Team Czech Republic. Jaroslav Halak started for Team Europe and Petr Mrazek started for Team Czech Republic. No scoring in the first period. Zdeno Chara would open the scoring at 10:05 of the 2nd to give Team Europe the 1-0 lead. Assists were from Thomas Vanek and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare. Jakub Voracek would score at 13:28 to tie the game up at 1. Michal Jordan and Milan Michalek with the assists. Mats Zuccarello would score at 2:17 of the 3rd period to give Team Europe a 2-1 lead. Halak with the lone assist. Martin Hanzal would tie the game at on the powerplay at 8:31 of the 3rd. The assists were by Vladimir Sobotka and Ales Hemsky. The game would go into overtime tied at 2. At the 2:16 mark of the overtime period Leon Draisaitl would score to give Team Europe the win. The lone assist was by Zuccarello. Halak had 28 saves on 30 shots. Mrazek had 38 saves on 41 shots. The second game was Team Russia vs Team North America. Sergei Bobrovsky with the start for Team Russia. Auston Matthews would open the scoring for Team North America at 5:14 of the 1st period. Evgeny Kuznetsov would give Russia the 3-1 lead at 13:37 of the 2nd Artemi Panarin and Nikita Zaitsev with the assists. Vladimir Tarasenko made it 4-1 at 15:43 of the 2nd. The second day of the Tournament Round had 2 games. Team Sweden vs Team Russia and Team North America vs Team Finland.
The first game was between Team Sweden and Team Russia. Jacob Markstrom started for Team Sweden. Sergei Bobrovsky started for Team Russia. No scoring in the first period. Gabriel Landeskog opened the scoring on the powerplay for Team Sweden at 10:41 of 2nd period. Erik Karlsson and Nicklas Backstrom with the assist. Victor Hedman scored at 12:52 of the 2nd to make it 2-0. Assists by Carl Hagelin and Henrik Sedin. Alex Ovechkin scored at 19:27 of the 3rd period to make the game 2-1. Evgeni Malkin and Pavel Datsyuk with the assists. Sweden won the game 2-1. Markstrom made 27 saves on 28 shots in the win. Bobrovsky made 27 saves on 29 shots. The second game was Team North America vs Team Finland. Matt Murray with the start for Team North America and Pekka Rinne for Team Finland. Team Europe vs Team USA and Team Czech Republic vs Team Canada.
The first game was between Team Europe and Team USA. Jonathan Quick was starting goalie for Team USA. Jaroslav Halak started for Team Europe. Marian Gaborik would score the first goal of the tournament at 4:19 of the 1st to give Team Europe a 1-0 lead.Frans Nielsen and Mats Zuccarello with the assists. Leon Draisaitl would score at 4:02 in the 2nd to give Europe a 2-0 lead. The assists were by Nino Niederreiter and Tobias Rieder. Pierre-Edouard Bellemare would score at the 18:32 mark of the 2nd to make the score 3-0. Assists were from Jannik Hansen and Christian Ehrhoff. And that’s how the game would end. Quick did not look good only making 14 saves on 17 shots in the loss. Halak made 35 saves in the shutout win The second game was between Team Czech Republic and Team Canada. Carey Price started in net for Team Canada. Michal Neuvirth started for Team Czech Republic.Sidney Crosby opened the scoring for Team Canada at 8:26. The assists were by Brad Marchand and Steven Stamkos. Brent Burns would make the score 2-0 at the 18:08 mark of the 1st period. The assists were by Crosby, and Patrice Bergeron.Bergeron would add a goal at 19:59 of the 1st to make it 3-0 Team Canada. Marchand with the lone assist. Team Canada’s Joe Thornton scored at the 7:22 mark of the 2nd period to make it 4-0. Crosby and Matt Duchene. Jonathan Toews scored on the powerplay at 14:45 of the second to make it 5-0. Ryan Getzlaf and John Tavares with the assists. Alex Pietrangelo scored a powerplay goal at 12:41 in the 3rd to make it 6-0. Assists were by Drew Doughty and Tavares. I know it doesn’t seem like it with the score,but Neuvirth looked good. Team Canada was out playing Team Czech the whole game. Neuvirth made 44 saves on 50 shots. Carey Price made 27 saves in the shutout effort. Team Sweden plays Team Russia and Team North America play Team Finland on Sunday. Sweden v. Russia will be on ESPN at 3pm and North America v. Finland on ESPN 2 at 8pm The final day of Pre-Qualifiers had 3 games. Team Czech Republic vs Team North America, Team Sweden vs Team Europe, and Team Russia vs Team Canada. The North America-Czech and Canada-Russia games were played at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh
The first game was between Team North America and Team Canada. Starting goalies were Michal Neuvirth for Team Czech Republic, and Matt Murray for Team North America. Ondrej Palat opened the scoring with a powerplay goal at the 10:08 mark of the first period to give the Czech Republic the 1-0 lead. Assists by Ales Hemsky and Michal Kempny. Halfway through the 2nd period Petr Mrazek relieved Neuvirth in net. Connor Hellebuyck relieved Matt Murray to start the 3rd period. Radek Faksa scored at 7:16 mark of the 3rd period to make the score 2-0. Assists by David Pastrnak and Palat. Shane Gostisbehere answered for Team North America at the 7:58 to make it 2-1. Assists were by Dylan Larkin and Mark Scheifele. Auston Matthews would tie the game at 10:57 with a powerplay goal. Johnny Gaudreau and Gostisbehere with the assists. Tomas Plekanec would scored at 11:50 to give the Czech Republic the lead again 3-2. Assists by Hemsky and Jakub Nakladal. Neuvirth would finish with 25 saves on 25 shots and Mrazek would make 17 saves on 19 shots for the Czech Republic. Matt Murray would make 16 saves on 17 shots and Hellebuyck would make 10 saves on 12 shots for Team North America. The Next game was Team Sweden vs. Team Europe. Daniel Sedin scored a powerplay goal at the 17:07 mark to put team Sweden on the board to make ti 3-1. Assists by Erik Karlsson and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Thomas Vanek would score at the 5:01 mark of the 3rd to make it 4-1 Team Europe. The lone assist was by Mats Zuccarello. Draisaitl would cap off the hat trick at the 6:46 mark of the 3rd to make the score 5-1. Assists were by Roman Josi and Seidenberg. Patric Hornqvist scored at 15:09 to make it 5-2. Assists by Victor Hedman and Filip Forsberg. Anze Kopitar would add an empty net goal at 19:28 mark to seal the deal. The assists were from Tatar and Andrej Sekera. Halak made 34 saves on 36 saves in win. Lundqvist made 17 saves on 22 shots The final game of the night was Team Russia vs Team Canada. Sergei Bobrovsky started in the net for Team Russia and Carey Price for Team Canada. Patrice Bergeron opened the scoring at 8:49 of the first period to make it 1-0 Canada. Sidney Crosby and Brent Burns. There was no scoring in the 2nd period. Alex Ovechkin scored a powerplay goal at 3:40 of the 3rd to tie the game at 1-1. The assists were by Artemi Panarin and Evgeni Malkin. Panarin would score at 7:25 of the 3rd to give Russia the 2-1 lead. Assists were by Evgeny Dadonov and Vadim Shipachyov. John Tavares would score to tie it at 2-2 at the 13:58 mark. Drew Doughty with the lone assist. The Game would go into overtime. At 3:29 of OT, Ryan Getzlaf would score to give Team Canada the win 3-2. Brent Burns with the lone assist. Carey Price made 24 saves on 26 shots in the win. Sergei Bobrovsky made 45 saves on 48 shots in the loss.The Prelims start on Saturday Day 6 of the Pre-tournament only had one game and that was the game between Team Finland and Team USA. Pekka Rinne started for Team Finland and Jonathan Quick started for Team USA.
T.J. Oshie opened the scoring for Team USA at the 1:08 mark of the 1st period. Ryan Kesler and Ryan McDonagh with the assist. There was no other scoring in the 1st period. Ryan Kesler scored at the 3:37 mark of the 2nd period to give Team USA a 2-0 lead. Blake Wheeler and Max Pacioretty. Derek Stepan scored to make the lead 3-0 at the 5:34 mark. John Carlson with the lone assist. Team Finland would finally get on the board with a powerplay goal by Patrik Laine at the 11:22 of the 3rd period. Sami Vatanen and Aleksander Barkov with the assists. Jussi Jokinen would score at the 15:27 mark to bring the game within one. Rasmus Ristolainen with the lone assist. The game would end with the Score Team USA 3 Team Finland 2. Pekka Rinne made 26 saves on 29 shots for Team Finland. Jonathan Quick made 30 saves on 32 shots. This is the last pre-tournament game for both teams. Day 4 of the Pre-tournament only had one game and that was the game between Team North America and Team Europe. Starting Goalies were Pittsburgh native John Gibson for Team North America and Thomas Greiss.
Aaron Ekblad started the scoring at 5:20 of the first for Team North America. The assist were by Austin Matthews and Pittsburgh native Brandon Saad. Dylan Larkin scored at 6:27 of the first to give Team North America a 2-0 lead. Assist by Pittsburgh native Vincent Trocheck and Ryan Murray. Aaron Ekblad would score his 2nd of the game at 7:19 of the first to make it 3-0. Lone assist was by Nathan MacKinnon. Team Europe would finally get on the board at 8:55 of the first with a goal by Pierre-Edouard Bellemare. The lone assist was by Thomas Vanek. Morgan Rielly scored at the 10:22 mark to extend Team North America’s lead to 4-1. Lone assist was by Jonathan Drouin. That would also be the last that we would see of Griess in this game as Jaroslav Halak would replace him in the crease for Team Europe. Johnny “Hockey” Gaudreau would score at the 15:54 mark of the 1st to make the score 5-1. The lone assist was by Mark Scheifele. Marian Gaborik scored at the 4:50 mark of the 2nd period for Team Europe to make the score 5-2. The assist were by Roman Josi and Bellemare. Marian Gaborik would add a second goal in the second at the 19:14 to bring Team Europe within 2 goals. The assist were by Frans Nielsen and Mats Zuccarello. Frans Nielsen scored at the 8:17 mark of the 3rd to bring Team Europe within one at 5-4. The assist were by Josi and Zuccarello. Johnny “Hockey” scored his 2nd of the game at 11:29 of the 3rd to make the score 6-4. The assist was by MacKinnon and Colton Parayko. Dylan Larkin would seal the game with an empty net goal at the 19:46 mark. The assist were by Jack Eichel and Parayko. John Gibson would finish the game with 29 saves on 33 shots for Team North America. Thomas Greiss would make 4 saves on 8 shots before being pulled. Jaroslav Halak made 22 saves on 24 shots in relief for Team Europe. Day 3 of the Pre-tournament games had 3 games. Team Russia vs. Czech Republic, Team Finland vs. Team Sweden, and Team USA vs. Team Canada.
To start the day off Team Czech Republic outlasted Team Russia met for the 2nd time in the pre-qualifier. The Starting goalies were Semyon Varlamov for Russia and The game was scoreless going into the 3rd period. Russian Nikita Kucherov opened up the scoring at the 1:04 mark of the 3rd with assist from Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alexei Emelin. At the 18:49 mark of the 3rd period Tomas Plekanec tied the game with assist from Michael Frolik and Roman Polak. Regulation would end in a tie. No one was able to get a goal in the 5 min 3 on 3 OT period so the game went to the shootout. In the 2nd round of the shootout Jakub Voracek scored for the Czech Republic and Vladimir Tarasenko scored for Russia. In the 3rd round of the shootout Ales Hemsky scored for Team Czech Republic and Nikita Kucherov missed the net to get the Czech Republic the 2-1 win. Varlamov had 33 saves on 34 shots and Neuvirth made 20 saves on 21 shots Team Finland and Team Sweden met again after their first game went into OT. Tuukka Rask started for Team Finland and Henrik Lundqvist started for Team Sweden. Loui Eriksson opened the scoring on the powerplay for Team Sweden at 8:56 of the 1st with assist by Henrik Sedin and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Loui Eriksson added a 2nd powerplay goal at the 18:06 mark of the 1st with assist by Daniel and Henrik Sedin. In the 2nd period Patric Hornqvist scored unassisted at 13:55 to make it 3-0 for Sweden. At 16:53 of the 2nd Rasmus Ristolainen scored for Finland with assist from Mikko Koivu and Joonas Donskoi to make it 3-1. Mikko Koivu scored at 19:58 of the 2nd to make the score 3-2 with assist by Donskoi and Ristolainen. Nicklas backstrom scored at 11:54 of the 3rd to make the score 4-2 with assist from Filip Forsberg and Hornqvist. Hornqvist scored at 14:45 of the 3rd to make it 5-2 with assist from Forsberg. Finland’s Erik Haula scored at 16:34 of the 3rd to make it 5-3 with assist by Jyrki Jokipakka and Esa Lindell. Filip Forsberg added a goal at 17:53 of the 3rd to make the game 6-3 with an assist from Hornqvist. Rask had 23 saves on 28 shots in the loss for Finland. Sweden’s Lundqvist made 11 saves on 14 shots. Team USA and Canada played for the 2nd time in 2 days. The starting Goalies were Braden Holtby for Team Canada and Cory Schneider for Team USA. The game started with the same intensity that the game yesterday ended with. Logan Couture opened up the scoring on the Powerplay at the 11:14 mark of the 1st with assist by Joe Thornton and Corey Perry.. John Tavares scored to on the powerplay at 13:25 of the 1st to make the score 2-0 for Canada with assist from Steven Stamkos and Drew Doughty. Jay Bouwmeester scored at 15:38 of the first to make the game 3-0 Canada. Assist were from Ryan Getzlaf and Corey. Ryan McDonagh scored at 16:35 of the 1st to make the game 3-1. The lone assist was from Derek Stepan. Team USA struck at 00:38 of the 2nd on a powerplay goal by John Carlson to make it a 3-2 game. The lone assist was by Patrick Kane. Matt Duchene scored while playing 4 on 4 to put Canada up by 2 again at 4-2. The assist by Tyler Seguin and Ryan Doughty. Corey Crawford came in to replace Holtby halfway through the 2nd. Ben Bishop Came in to started the 3rd replacing Schneider. John Tavares scored on the powerplay at 8:01 of the 3rd to extend the lead to 5-3. Assist from Stamkos and Jonathan Toews. Team USA Goalie Cory Schneider made 20 saved on 24 shots and Ben Bishop made 13 saves on 14 shots. Team Canada Goalie Braden Holtby made 11 saves on 13 shots and Corey Crawford made save 10 on 10 shots. The game ended with a scrum. Day 2 of the Pre-tournament games had only one game but it was Team USA vs Team Canada, played at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH. The starting Goalies for the game were Jonathan Quick and Carey Price. The first period was a fast pace affair. The first 16 minutes of the game both goalies made some nice saves. Zach Parise opened the Scoring for Team USA at the 16:56 mark of 1st with assist by Ryan Suter and Derek Stepan. Patrick Kane added a 2nd score at 18:01 with assist by Joe Pavelski.. After the 2nd Goal Team Canada started getting chippy. The first scuffle was started by Captain Sidney Crosby though Team Canada managed to get Powerplay out of the scuffle. The 2nd period started out slower for the first 5 minutes and then Team Canada started to bring pressure. Jonathan Quick made some nice saves and was helped by Ryan Kesler making a beautiful kick save in the crease. Logan Couture left the game in the 2nd after going head first into the boards on a check by T.J Oshie. At 13:24 of the 2nd Patrice Bergeron scored for Team Canada making 2-1 with assist from Sidney Crosby and Brad Marchand. Joe Pavelski answered at 15:54 of 2nd making the score 3-1 with assist by Jack Johnson and Patrick Kane . Ryan Kesler was ejected at the 17:05 mark of the 2nd for boarding Shea Weber. The 3rd Period started with Ben Bishop in net for Team USA. Drew Doughty scored at 05:21 to make the score 3-2. Assist by Ryan Getzlaf and Jake Muzzin. With 2 minutes left Team Canada pulled their goalie to attempt to tie the game. Derek Stepan added an empty netter at 18:39 to make the score 4-2 and that’s how the game would end. I was surprised at how physical the game was considering that it was only the first pre-qualifier game. The two head play again tomorrow at the Canadian Tire Center in Ottawa Day 1 of the Pre-tournament games have been completed with 3 games played, Russia vs Czech Republic, Finland vs Sweden, and North America vs Europe.
