The NHL season began on Wednesday with four games being played including the Stanley Cup Champion Penguins playing the St. Louis Blues in Pittsburgh. Before the game the team would raise their fifth and second in a row Stanley Cup Banner. Chad Ruhwedel and Josh Archibald would be the scratches for the Penguins. Nate Prosser, Ivan Barbashev, and Wade Megan would be the scratches for the Blues. Matt Murray would be the starting goalie for the Penguins. Jake Allen would be between the Pipes for the St. Louis Blues.
Sidney Crosby would get called for hooking 50 seconds into the game and by doing so would prevent the Penguins going down early. The Penalty kill would come looking great creating a few chances to score short handed. Justin Schultz would score the Penguins first goal of the season at 6:37 to give the Penguins the 1-0 lead. Jake Guentzel would provide a great screen preventing Jake Allen from seeing the puck until it was in the net. Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel would get the assists. After the goal the St. Louis Blues would score coming to life and started pressuring the Penguins. Matt Murray would make some great saves, but the Blues would get on the board at 8:31 to tie the game at one with a goal that bounced off the skate of Brayden Schenn. The Officials would look at the goal and the goal would stand. Carl Gunnarsson and Jaden Schwartz would get the assists. Olli Maatta would then get called for tripping at 16:26 to put the Penguins back on the penalty kill. The penalty kill would leave Colton Parayko open in the slot and the puck would find his way to him and he would put the puck behind Matt Murray to give the Blues the 2-1 lead. The goal would be unassisted. The Penguins and Blues would each have 12 shots in the first. The Blues would come out in the 2nd and continue to apply pressure. Sidney Crosby would get called for tripping at 6:15 to put the Penguins back on the penalty kill. The Penguins would kill the penalty then start coming to life. Jake Allen would make some great saves. Eventually the Penguins pressure would prevail and at 12:37 Olli Maatta would score from the point to tie the game at 2. Bryan Rust and Evgeni Malkin would get the assists. Robert Bortuzzo would get called for holding at 12:52 and the Penguins would get their first powerplay of the night. The Penguins powerplay would get cut short however with Jake Guentzel getting called for slashing well behind the play at 14:03. The Blues would get called for too many men on the ice just 3 seconds after Bortuzzo’s penalty had ended. The penalty would be served by Tage Thompson. Alex Pietrangelo would score to put the Blues ahead 3-2 at 15:37. Vladimir Sobotka and Paul Stastny would get the assists. The Blues would out shoot the Penguins 13-10 in the 2nd. Paul Stastny would score 3:38 into the 3rd to make it 4-2 Blues. Vladimir Sobotka and Vladimir Tarasenko would get the assists. Penguins would get their 3rd powerplay of the night as Alex Pietrangelo would get called for slashing at 5:26. The penguins would apply pressure for the entire 2 minutes, however would have no shots on goal to show for it. Robert Bortuzzo would get called for tripping at 12:10 to give the Penguins their 4th powerplay. 16 seconds later Brayden Schenn would get called for closing hand on the puck to give the penguins a 2 man advantage. The penguins would finally get some shots on the powerplay and Sidney Crosby would score on a rebound to bring the penguins within one at 13:46. Jake Guentzel and Evgeni Malkin would get the assists. Conor Sheary would bury a beautiful pass from Greg McKegg at 14:40 to tie the game at 4. Bryan Rust would get the other assist. The Penguins would out shoot the Blues 11 to 8 in the third. The Penguins and Blues would go into overtime with it’s new 3 on 3 format. Alex Pietrangelo would score on the lone shot of overtime to give the Blues the 5-4 win. The Penguins would go 1 for 5 on the powerplay and kill 3 of 4 penalties. Sidney Crosby would have a goal and an assist. Conor Sheary, Olli Maatta, and Justin Schultz would each have a goal. Bryan Rust, Jake Guentzel, and Evgeni Malkin would each have 2 assists. Greg McKegg would have an assist. Matt Murray would make 29 saves on 34 shots. The Penguins play the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday in Chicago.
