Wednesday night the Penguins(1-1-1) would be in Washington D.C to play the Capitals (2-0-1). This would be the first game against the Capitals since the penguins beat them in the 2nd round on the 2016-2017 playoffs. Scott Wilson, Josh Archibald, and Chris Summers would be the scratches for the Penguins. Taylor Chorney, Tom Wilson(suspension), and Nathan Walker would be the scratches for the Capitals. Matt Murray would be the goalie for the Penguins and Braden Holtby would be in the crease for the Capitals.
Matt Niskanen would get called for slashing to put the Penguins on the powerplay for the 1st time in the game at 3:27 of the first period. Kris Letang would score his first of the season off a rebound while the Penguins were on the powerplay at 5:22 to make it 1-0. Bryan Rust and Patric Hornqvist would get the assists. Braden Holtby would get called for delay of game at 10:33 to put the pens back on the powerplay. The Capitals would kill the penalty. Chad Ruhwedel would get called for slashing at 13:10 to put the Penguins penalty killers on the ice for the first time. The Penguins would kill off the penalty. John Carlson would get called for tripping at 17:43 to put the pens back on the powerplay. The Capitals would kill the penalty. The Penguins would have 9 shots to the Capitals 7 in the 1st. Patric Hornqvist would go to the sin bin at 1:57 of the second for slashing. The Penguins would kill off the penalty. Christian Djoos would get called for tripping at 6:26. The Penguins would get their second powerplay goal of the night at 8:20 when Patric Hornqvist put a puck that was sitting in the crease into the back of the net to make it 2-0. Tom Kuhnhackl and Sidney Crosby would get the assists. Matt Niskanen would get called for interference at 11:20. The Capitals would kill off the penalty. Christian Djoos would put the Capitals on the board at 19:07 with a laser of a shot from the left circle to make it 2-1. Lars Eller and Brett Connolly would have the assists. Alex Chiasson would get called for holding at 19:55. The Penguins would have 15 shots to the Capitals 8 in the 2nd. 38 seconds into the third while on the powerplay, Conor Sheary would redirect a Justin Schultz shot pass to make it 3-1. Olli Maatta would get the other assist. Greg McKegg would get called for slashing at 1:38 to bring the Penguins penalty killers back on the ice. At 5:56, less than 20 seconds after getting out of the box, Greg McKegg would go back for high sticking. The Penguins would kill off that penalty as well. Alex Ovechkin would continue his scoring streak and tip in a pass from Christian Djoos make it 3-2 and bring the Capitals within one. Niklas Backstrom would get the other assist. The Penguins would have 12 shots to the Capitals 7 in the 3rd. The Penguins would have a great night on special teams going 3 for 6 on the powerplay and killing all 4 penalties. Patric Hornqvist would have a goal and an assist. Conor Sheary and Kris Letang would each have a goal. Bryan Rust, Tom Kuhnhackl, Sidney Crosby, Olli Maatta, and Justin Schultz would all have an assist. Matt Murray would make 20 saves on 22 shots. The Penguins travel to Tampa Florida where they will take on the Lighting(2-1-0) on Thursday.
