Friday Night was the first night of the NHL draft and the Pittsburgh Penguins started the night with the 31st overall pick, which would be the last pick of the 1st round, due to winning the Stanley Cup. GM Jim Rutherford would make a trade with the St. Louis Blues. The Penguins would get the 51st overall pick and right wing Ryan Reaves in exchange for the 31st overall pick and Center Oskar Sundqvist.
Ryan Reeves played 80 games last year netting 7 goals and 6 assists and 104 penalty minutes. Reaves would also play in 11 playoff game with no points and 8 penalty minutes. Reaves is 30 years old with 1 year left on his contract at 1.12 million. Oskar Sundqvist played 63 games for the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins scoring 20 goals and adding 26 assists. Oskar Sundqvist is 23 years old and a Restricted free Agent.Jim Rutherford stated during the playoffs that he was going to add toughness to the team to protect his superstars and this was the 1st move in that direction. Justin’s thought on the trade: the draft picks are of no meaning with his being the weakest draft class in some time though i feel that giving up a depth center that has a high potential was too steep a price to pay for “protection” and unsure about the gamble to go away from the playing style that just won you back to back Stanley Cups The draft continues on Saturday. Please let us know your thoughts on the trade and what positions that the penguins should pick up in the draft.
