The Penguins season would continue on Thursday night against the Chicago Blackhawks in Chicago. This would be the Blackhawks home and season opener. The Penguins had played the St. Louis Blues the night prior losing in overtime 5-4. Chad Ruhwedel and Josh Archibald would be the scratches for the Penguins. Cody Franson, Tommy Wingels, and Jordan Oesterle would be the scratches for the hawks. Antti Niemi would get his first start in goal for the Penguins. Corey Crawford would be the goalie for the Blackhawks.
Ryan Hartman would bury a beautiful pass from Patrick Kane at 6:21 to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead. Michal Kempny would have the second assist on the goal. 45 seconds later Brandon Saad would score on a 2 on 1 breakaway with the puck going off of his body and into the net to make it 2-0.. Richard Panik would get the assist. At 7:34 Nick Schmaltz would backhand a Patrick Kane pass into the net to make it 3-0. Ryan Hartman would get the 2nd assist. Brandon Saad would would score on a bad rebound from Antti Niemi at 9:16 to make it 4-0. Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith would get the assists. Matt Murray would replace Niemi in net. Patrick Sharp would score on the rush at 17:01 to make it 5-0. Artem Anisimov and Alex DeBrincat would get the assists. Kris Letang would get called for interference at 19:58 to give the Blackhawks the powerplay that would carry over to the 2nd period. Chicago would have 21 shots to the Penguins 12 in the 1st. Jonathan Toews would get called for interference 27 seconds into the 2nd to end the powerplay for the hawks. Jan Rutta would get called for interference at 1:22 to put Pittsburgh on a 4 on 3 powerplay. At 2:05 Phil Kessel would bury a tic-tac-toe play from Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on the powerplay to put the Penguins on the board. At 3:49 Patrick Kane would backhand the puck behind Murray to make it 6-1. Ryan Hartman and Jan Rutta would get the assists. The Penguins would let the frustration start to show with Carl Hagelin getting called for slashing at 4:21 and Evgeni Malkin getting called for hooking at 7:12. Richard Panik would put a pass from Nick Schmaltz into the net shortly after the powerplay ended to make it 7-1. Jan Rutta would get the second assist. At 10:40 Nick Schmaltz would score his 2nd of the game on a 4 on 2 rush to make it 8-1.. Patrick Kane and Ryan Hartman would get the assists. The Penguins continued to let their frustration show with Justin Schultz going to the box at 11:28 for holding, and Hagelin going back to the box at 14:57 for tripping. Both teams would have 14 shots in the 2nd. Brandon Saad would complete the hat trick with a redirect of a Jonathan Toews pass 5:21 into the 3rd to make it 9-1. Brent Seabrook would get the other assist. Brent Seabrook would score on a rebound at 13:45 to make it 10-1. John Hayden and Ryan Hartman would get the assists. Phil Kessel would get a 10 minute misconduct at 17:33. Tom Kuhnhackl would get called for cross checking at Ryan Reeves would get a 10 minute misconduct at 17:50. The Blackhawks would have 9 shots to the Penguins 3 in the 3rd. This was the first time since Jan. 13 1996 against the sharks that the penguins gave up 10+ goals in a game. The Penguins would go 1 for 2 on the powerplay and kill all 6 penalties. Phil Kessel would have a goal. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin would each have an assist. Antti Niemi would make 9 saves on 13 shots. Matt Murray would make 25 saves on 31 shots. The Penguins next game is on Saturday at home vs. the Nashville Predators.
