The Penguins opened up their season at home against the Washington Capitals. Prior to the Game as the players were coming out for introductions, Sidney Crosby brought the Stanley Cup out to center ice. After that the team raised the new Stanley Cup Banner to the rafters. Starting goalie for Pittsburgh was Marc-Andre Fleury. Starting goalie for the Washington Capitals was Braden Holtby.
The Capitals would score quickly at just 59 seconds into the game with a goal by Andre Burakovsky. The assists were by Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson.Tom Kuhnhackl would get called for roughing at 6:33. The Penguins would kill off the penalty. At 8:53 Tom Sestito and Tom Wilson would drop the gloves and get 5 minutes for fighting. Justin Schultz would get called for High Sticking at 17:55. The penguins would killed off that penalty as well. The Capitals would out shoot the Penguins 11-10 in the first period. The Penguins would get a Powerplay at 7:58 of the 2nd period, when the Capitals would get called for too many men on the ice. The penalty would be served by Alexander Ovechkin. The Penguins would capitalize and tie the game at 1 on the powerplay with a goal by Patric Hornqvist. The assists would be by Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin. Evgeni Malkin would score at 18:52 to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead. Conor Sheary would get the lone assist. Justin Williams would get called for Roughing at 19:56 to put the Penguins on the powerplay. 1 minute and 56 seconds of which would carry over to the 3rd period. Penguins would out shoot the Capitals 10-9 in the second period. Evgeni Malkin would get called hooking at the 1 minute mark of the 3rd to cut the penguins powerplay short. Andre Burakovsky would get his second goal of the game at 6:13 to tie the game at 2. Assists would go to Nicklas Backstrom and Matt Niskanen. The game would be tied at 2-2 to end the 3rd. The game would go into overtime. The Capitals would out shoot the Penguins 15-8 in the 3rd period. The overtime period would be exciting and Fleury and the Crossbar would make some big saves to make the game go to the shoot out. The Capitals would out shoot the Penguins 6-2 in Overtime. Nick Bonino would be the first shoot for the penguins and would miss the net. T.J. Oshie would score on his attempt for the Capitals. Next for the Penguins would be Evgeni Malkin who would score on his shoot out attempt. Fleury would stop Evgeny Kuznentov’s wrist shot on his attempt. Kris Letang would score on his attempt. Nicklas Backstrom would score on his attempt to continue the shoot out. Phil Kessel would score on his shootout attempt. Marc-Andre Fleury would stop Alex Ovechkin’s backhand shot to win the game for the Penguins. The final score would be 3-2. Marc-Andre Fleury would make 39 saves on 41 shots. Braden Holtby would make 28 saves on 30 shots. Patric Hornqvist would have a goal. Kris Letang would have an assist. Evgeni Malkin would have a goal and an assist. Conor Sheary would have an assist.
